Mission Statement
To use the talents and resources of the Coalition member agencies and the Asheville / Buncombe community in promoting a wide range of affordable housing options which lead to thriving, safe neighborhoods and individual and family self sufficiency.

United Way
Agency

It is because of our belief in the power and strength of home that AHC exists.

Since 1991 AHC has been privileged to work with the people of Asheville and Buncombe County by providing those in search of a new home the housing counseling, educational and supportive services they needed to accomplish their goals.

Please learn about each of our direct services by clicking on the Programs page.

We have also worked hard on a local and statewide level to advocate for the increased support and funding of policies and programs that both produce and preserve affordable housing.

We are dedicated to working on housing policy issues because Asheville and Buncombe County does in fact face a housing crisis.

* According to a study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition in 2000, of Asheville s renters 42% could not afford a two bedroom and 54% could not afford a three bedroom apartment.
* According to the NC Home Builders Association, Asheville currently ranks as the most expensive housing market in the state.
* According to the US Census, in 1999 the rental vacancy rate nationwide was 8.1% and 10.8% in North Carolina. According to the City of Asheville, our local vacancy rate is 3%.

The Affordable Housing Coalition of Asheville and Buncombe County, its board, staff and especially clients, would like to thank all who supported our Spring Gala, “Lighting the Path Home”. We especially would like to acknowledge and thank the following:

And yet we remain hopeful:
* The NC Legislature passed the landmark ban on predatory lending practices in North Carolina. This legislation helps to protect homeowners from unscrupulous lenders who often strip families of the equity they had built, and in some case even take the very home they live in.
* The City of Asheville has created a Housing Trust Fund using $400,000 from the tax base. This Trust Fund will help for-profit and non-profit developers to develop more affordable housing through the creation of a revolving loan pool. These local monies will help developers to leverage even more money from outside our community bringing much needed resources to our area.

Yes, there is much to celebrate, but even more so there is much to learn and accomplish. We hope that as you browse the following pages you will find a service that may help you or someone you know. We also hope that you are inspired to join us as we work to make ours a community in which those who work here can also live here.
